FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — The Averett University men's soccer team opened its 2016 season with a heartbreaking 3-2 double-overtime loss to the University of Mary Washington on Friday.
After neither team found a golden goal in the first extra period, Jack Saslowsky received a pass from Jacob Burke and found the net to give Mary Washington (1-0) the thrilling victory.
Trailing 2-1 in the 78th minute, freshman
Daniel Surley received a feed from junior
Simon Holmstrom and headed in his first collegiate goal to knot the score. Averett (0-1) had a couple of chances to pull ahead nearly 10 minutes later, but Mary Washington goalkeeper Matt Spencer was there to deny the Cougars and force the game into overtime.
The first 45 minutes were a defensive struggle as neither team could get on the board. However, the Cougars jumped ahead just over a minute into the second half when sophomore
David Cuperman fired a shot past Spencer to put the Cougars in front 1-0.
Mary Washington tied the score at 1-1 when Riley Fisher slipped past the Cougars' defense and found pay dirt with his shot. The Eagles pulled in front in the 71st minute with a goal from Daniel Kalke.
