FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — Soccer is a game of attrition. This was especially true for the Averett University men's soccer team on Saturday as it picked up a 2-1 double-overtime victory over Marymount University.
Averett (1-1) found itself in a tight battle heading into the second overtime period. However, the Cougars didn't have to wait long for the game-winner as freshman
Daniel Surley picked up his second collegiate goal in the 103rd minute to give Averett its first win of the season.
Third-year head coach
Philip Wilson was impressed with both the physical and mental strength is team displayed. Especially after playing two great teams in as many days.
"No matter who you play, it's difficult to play two games in two days," Wilson said. "I am very proud of the guys' work rate this weekend and how they overcame going down in both games. Mentally and physically everyone gave it their all and I am so very proud of this squad."
After both teams played a scoreless first half, Marymount (0-2) pushed ahead at the 47:10 mark when Ahmed El-manialawy took a feed from Brandon Orozco and buried a shot in the back of the net.
However, the Cougars responded back when sophomore
Matthew Monos knotted the score in the 55th minute. That would round out the scoring until Surley's game-winner in extra minutes.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Austin Bramhall had a solid night between the sticks, posting six saves.
Averett opens up its home slate on Sept. 6 when it welcomes Randolph College to Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
