WRITER'S NOTE: Dear Cougar Nation, there are so many great stories in Averett Athletics. Some are regarding the successes of our current student-athletes and some highlight the impressive things our alumni are doing following their collegiate careers. This regular feature called the "SID Notebook" briefly highlights those accomplishments. If you wish to submit news or ideas for this segment, please feel free to email me at cawilson@averett.edu. I hope you enjoy and Go Cougars! — Drew Wilson, Sports Information Director.
Nearly 280 Averett University student-athletes and coaches were among the more than 500 volunteers from Averett to give back to the local community during the Dan River Region's Week to Engage last week. Just within Averett athletics, student-athletes and coaches logged 497 total hours over five days.
Partnering with Averett's Center for Community Engagement and Career Competitiveness (CCECC), Averett's student-athletes and coaches helped several organizations in the community including God's Storehouse, the Boys and Girls Club of Danville, Cardinal Village Youth Center, the Danville Science Center, Haven and the Epiphany Episopal Church.
Volunteers did everything from participating in activities with children to helping organize and stock goods to painting and other needed tasks.
Check out some of the highlights in our photo gallery.
GETTING THE FAMILY BACK TOGETHER: Homecoming is the time of year where alumni gather back at Averett to visit the old stomping grounds and reminisce about their college years. This year, the Averett football program is looking to bring back many of its former players for its Averett Football Reunion 2016 event Oct. 14-16 during Homecoming Weekend.
