MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Averett University men's basketball held off Huntingdon College down the stretch for a 67-61 conference road win Sunday afternoon.
Averett (4-11, 2-2 USA South), which trailed by two at halftime, took a 37-35 lead less than four minutes into the second half. The Cougars held a slight advantage until Huntingdon (2-13, 0-4 USA South) regained a brief 51-50 advantage with 8:38 to play before junior
James Contreras Jr.'s layup put Averett back in front moments later.
A three-point player by Contreras extended Averett's lead to 59-51 with 5:45 remaining. The Cougars withstood one more run by Huntingdon that got the Hawks back within two with 2:18 left and pulled away for the six-point road victory to improve to 4-0 all-time against Huntingdon.
Contreras led Averett with 19 points to go with six rebounds and three assists. Senior
Charles Bryant added a double-double of 13 points and 14 rebounds, and sophomores
T.J. McAllister and
Austin DeLucia chipped in with nine points each.
Huntingdon led by as many as nine points in the first half before Averett chipped away, pulling within 30-28 on DeLucia's 3-pointer just before the half.
Averett returns home to face rival Ferrum College on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
