BREVARD, N.C.— The Averett University men's soccer team dropped their Sunday matinee at Brevard College, 2-1. Two first half goals from the Tornados turned out to be too much for the Cougars to overcome.
 
Brevard (6-7) controlled the pace of play early on as they were able to generate plenty of scoring chances and defensively did not let Averett (4-11-2, 3-6-1 USA South) get a shot off until the 17th minute of play. Anton Borjesson capitalized on a Brevard corner kick in the 11th minute to give his team the 1-0 lead. Brevard stayed in attack mode throughout the rest of the first half as they were awarded for their effort right before halftime as Brock Turtle tallied a goal in the 44th minute.
 
Averett bounced back in the second half of play as they were able to match Brevard in shots at four a piece. The Cougars picked up their offensive pressure, which eventually broke the backline of Brevard as the Tornados committed an own goal in the 72nd minute. At this point, Averett began to put more numbers forward in hopes of finding the equalizer. Seniors Tobias Andreasson and Mitchell Smith would each put a shot on net that forced a save from Brevard goalkeeper Patrick Hall. The Tornados were able to hold off Averett's final offensive waves and defeated the Cougars, 2-1.
 
Averett will play their final regular season match on Wednesday, Oct. 25, at Ferrum College. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
