BANNER ELK, N.C. — Averett University women's tennis defeated Division II Lees-McRae College 5-4 Saturday afternoon after freshman Eleanor Crane clinched the ninth and deciding match at the LMC Tennis Courts.
 
Averett (1-0) emerged from doubles play in front 2-1 in the match. Senior Hannah Mattson and junior Heidi Sarkkinen won at No. 1 doubles 8-4 over Jaden Acklin and Mackenzie Langmade.
 
Sarkkinen also was victorious at No. 1 singles, beating Langmade 6-1, 6-3. At No. 3 singles, Crane defeated Lees-McRae's Becca Pierce 6-1, 6-0 in the deciding match.
 
Averett returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Chowan University at 2 p.m.
