Men's soccer picks up road win over Huntingdon in conference action

MONTGOMERY, Ala.— The Averett University men's soccer team bounced back from their loss at home to North Carolina Wesleyan College with a road win on Saturday over Huntingdon College, 3-1. Freshman Tommi Vuorinen collected his first collegiate goal and junior David Cuperman increased his single season goal record to nine.

The action was back and forth from the second the opening whistle was blown, but each side could not capitalize on their early opportunities. However, in the 26th minute, Averett's offensive pressure led Huntingdon to commit a foul inside their own 18-yard box which forced the head referee to call a penalty kick. Cuperman put his attempt in the back of the net to give Averett (4-6-2, 3-3-1 USA South) the 1-0 advantage.

The Cougars kept the Hawks (0-10-1, 0-6 USA South) offense at bay throughout the first half and padded onto their lead twice in the last five minutes of the opening period. In the 42nd minute, Cuperman slid a nice pass to Vuorinen who struck his left-footed shot from 20 yards out past the Huntingdon keeper. Then with 27 seconds left to play in the first half, sophomore Daniel Surley found junior Matthew Monos at the top of the 18-yard box and Monos beat the keeper with his shot to give Averett the 3-0 lead heading into halftime.

The Hawks came out of the break in action hungry to get themselves back in the match and received a golden opportunity to cut into the Averett lead in the 62nd minute. The Cougars committed a foul inside their own 18-yard box, giving the Hawks a chance to score at the penalty spot. However, sophomore Austin Bramhall made a huge save on the scoring opportunity to keep Huntingdon off the scoreboard.

Huntingdon, though, would be awarded two minutes later with their offensive pressure. Jeffrey Magee beat Bramhall from the corner of the 18-yard box on the far side of the field to cut the Cougar lead to 3-1.

After this, the Cougars tightened up defensively and held the Hawks to the lone goal. Averett would win the match over Huntingdon, 3-1.

The Cougars are back in action in less than 24 hours when they play at LaGrange College. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m.
