LYNCHBURG, Va. — The Averett University women's basketball team snagged a 79-69 non-conference victory over Randolph College on Wednesday afternoon at the RAD Center.
While the game was close in the first quarter, Averett (4-5) increased its lead to 42-33 by halftime, which eventually helped the Cougars claim the victory. Averett, which shot 40 percent from the field, extended its lead over Randolph (3-6) to as many as 20 points in the fourth quarter on a layup from junior Amani Ajayi with 4:35 to go.
Senior guard Samm Chandler led the way with 22 points, seven rebounds and three blocks, which pulls her within three blocks of tying the program's all-time record of 91 held by Michelle Warner.
Sophomore Brooke Carthon finished with 18 points and nine rebounds, sophomore Samantha Tecson added 10 points and sophomore Ravyn Johnson pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds.
As a team, the Cougars outscored Randolph 21-9 on second-chance opportunities.
Randolph's Daijah Johnson paced her team with 28 points and six rebounds.
The Cougars return to the court on Wednesday, Jan. 3, to face Salem College at the Grant Center for a 2 p.m. matchup.
