Softball drops two at home to Roanoke

Danville, Va. – Roanoke College beat the Averett University softball team in two contests on Sunday afternoon at Cougar Field. The Cougars fell 4-3 in the first game and 9-1 in the second.

In Game 1, Averett (3-5) jumped on the board first, scoring two runs in the first inning. Freshman Kaitlyn Aherron singled to center field to score senior Jessica Long.

Freshman Breanna Murphy followed suit to extend Averett's lead to two. The Maroons responded with a 2 RBI triple by Rachel Guilliams to knot the game in the second frame. After Andrea Grant's sac-fly that gave the Cougars a 3-2 advantage in the third, the next three innings were a pitching dual between freshman Taylor Bailey and Roanoke's Emily Salsberry. In the sixth inning, the Maroons tied the game with a fielder's choice that scored Scarlett Sisson making it 3-3. In the next play Roanoke scored their go ahead run on a fielding error to end the game 4-3.

Senior outfielder Samantha Hall and Aherron finished with two hits while Murphy added one hit to the total.

In Game 2, the Cougars and the Maroons were scoreless going into the fourth inning. Aherron helped the Cougars score first by hitting a single to left center that brought in Hall. Roanoke answered by tying the game in the fifth inning with a run from Taylor Sutherland on a wild pitch 1-1. The Maroons from there added to their lead every inning to end the game 9-1.

Hall, Aherron, Murphy, and sophomore Essence Pulliam each had one hit for the Cougars.

Averett returns to action on the road traveling to Cary, N.C. on Feb. 25 to play in the Triangle Classic.
