Box Score 2 CARY, N.C. — The Averett University softball walked away with two wins on Saturday afternoon at the Triangle Softball Classic at Thomas Brooks Park. The Cougars defeated Wilson College 5-3 and later beat Olivet College 17-3 in five innings.
Â
In Game 1, Averett (5-5) took a 2-0 lead over Wilson after the first inning on freshman
Kaitlyn Aherron's sacrifice fly and freshman
Casey Cook's single to left field. After Wilson plated one run in the second, the Cougars added a third run in the third inning on Aherron's RBI single. Wilson again closed to within one run in the top of the fourth, only to give that run back to Averett in the bottom half of the frame thanks to two errors.
The Cougars extended their lead to 5-2 in the sixth when senior
Jessica Long doubled home sophomore
Taylor Hodges. Although Wilson scored in the seventh, freshman pitcher
Taylor Bailey shut the Phoenix down the rest of the way.
Long and Cook each had two hits against Wilson while Bailey (2-3) earned the win in the circle.
Â
In Game 2, Averett scored 12 runs in the fourth inning after leading only 4-3 at the top of the frame. Freshman
Breanna Murphy doubled to left center to tack on two more runs and sophomore
Andrea Grant hit a three-run homer to ignite a fire in the Cougars shortly after. They continued to pile on run after run as they went through the lineup almost twice, which eventually allowed the Cougars to take the game in just five innings.
Â
Sophomore outfielder
Essence Pulliam went 3-for-3 while Long, Aherron and Cook each went 3-for-4. Aherron led the Cougars with five RBIs.
Â
Olivet failed to handle the Cougars' hits as they ended the game with seven errors.
Aherron (3-2) picked up the win, striking out three in five innings.
Â
Averett makes its way back to the field Sunday for the final day of the Triangle Softball Classic. The Cougars face Piedmont College at 11 a.m. and No. 4 Emory University at 1 p.m.Â
