Women's tennis drops season opener to Sweet Briar

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Averett University women's tennis team came up short in its season opener with a 6-3 loss to Sweet Briar College on Friday afternoon.

Averett was forced to drop two matches by default, which set them back a bit, but they still managed to come out with some victories.

Sophomore Heidi Sarkkinen and junior Hannah Mattson won both their singles and doubles matches to give the Cougars their three wins on the day.

Sarkkinen defeated AJ Lukanuski 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1 while Mattson beat Gina Rutledge 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 2 slot. The duo also topped the same two opponents in doubles earlier in the afternoon in No. 1 doubles.

The Cougars return to action on Sunday, Feb. 26, as they host Guilford College in its home opener at the Averett Tennis Courts at 1 p.m.
