DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University women's tennis team pulled out a 5-4 win over Guilford College in its home opener on Sunday afternoon at the Averett Tennis Courts.

At first, Averett (5-4) started off trailing 2-1 in doubles as sophomore
Heidi Sarkkinen and junior
Hannah Mattson snagged an 8-3 win over Guilford at the No. 1 spot. Then Sarkkinen and Mattson handled business in singles easily. Sophomores
Miriam Lindberg and
Ashley Thornton claimed victories at No. 4 and No. 6, respectively. Thornton managed to come back from behind. She stole a comeback win of 3-6, 7-6, 10-7.

The Cougars hit the court again on Friday, March 3 with a match against Division II Winston-Salem State University. The match is scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m.
