ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — Averett University men's basketball suffered a 71-59 conference loss at N.C. Wesleyan College on Saturday, snapping the Cougars' three-game winning streak.
Averett (8-13, 6-4 USA South) held a 34-33 lead, but a 13-1 run by N.C. Wesleyan (11-9, 4-5 USA South) over a three-minute span early in the second half swung the momentum in the Bishops' favor. The Cougars couldn't overcome that margin the rest of the way despite a career-high 16 points from sophomore
Jalen Burnett and 15 points from junior
James Contreras Jr.
Averett, which knocked off N.C. Wesleyan 76-72 less than two weeks ago in Danville, led by as many as four points multiple times in the first half before the Bishops inched ahead 33-29 at halftime.
In addition to scoring a career-high in points, Burnett matched his best output on the boards as a Cougar with five rebounds. Senior
Charles Bryant led Averett with a game-high 11 rebounds, pulling him within 34 of Averett's career rebounding record of 848 held by DeMarcus Morrison. Freshman
Moriba Diaby and Contreras added eight rebounds and seven rebounds, respectively. Sophomore
T.J. McAllister chipped in eight points and four steals off the bench.
Adrian Moore led N.C. Wesleyan with 21 points, 10 rebounds and six assists.
The Cougars return to action on Sunday at Greensboro College.
