RALEIGH, N.C. — The Averett University women's basketball sailed to a 62-43 conference win over Meredith College on Wednesday night at Weatherson Gym.
Averett (15-8, 8-4 USA South) gained an early 12-2 lead over Meredith to set the tone of the game in the first quarter and maintained a 10-point until halftime.
After the break, junior guard
Joelle Deese extended the Cougars' advantage with a 3-pointer to put Averett up 34-20 two minutes into the third quarter. Even though Meredith (3-19, 2-10 USA South) would manage to put in a few baskets, the Cougars answered on the opposite end. Midway through the fourth quarter,
Frida Lundquist stole the ball from Meredith's Kirstie King that led to a layup from freshman guard
Brooke Carthon. Carthon's layup gave the Cougars' their largest lead of the night (53-34).
Deese paced Averett with 12 points as Lundquist and junior guard
Samm Chandler followed with 11 points apiece. Carthon grabbed 10 boards as senior center
Jonna Koski added three blocks.
Chandler Hines led the Avenging Angels with 16 points.
Averett returns to action this weekend with a conference matchup against Mary Baldwin College at home on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m.
