Box Score 2 HUNTINGDON, Ala. — The Averett University softball team fell 2-0 to Huntingdon College on Saturday afternoon in a conference matchup. The Hawks defeated the Cougars 12-10 in the first matchup and 7-6 in eight innings to complete the day.
In the first game, Huntingdon (8-1, 7-3 USA South) scored four runs in the third inning after Kelsie Dardon's 2 RBI double to give itself a reasonable cushion. In the fourth inning, Averett (13-13, 5-3 USA South) answered with three runs behind junior
Amanda Wright's single to the right side scoring sophomore
Andrea Grant making the score 4-3.
The Cougars held tough defense not letting any runs score by the Hawks. In the top of the fifth Averett scored seven runs off of six hits. Freshman
Casey Cook started off the Cougar rally with a double that led to freshman
Kaitlyn Aherron scoring off a throwing error by the Hawks. Freshman
Nicole Cauthen followed suit with a double of her own scoring Cook to put the Cougars ahead by one. The seventh run in the inning for Averett was scored on Aherron's double to right center scoring senior
Samantha Hall giving a score of 10-4. The Hawks returned three of the runs in the bottom of the fifth tom make the score 10-7.
The Hawks completed their scoring in the bottom of the sixth when they scored five runs to give them the lead and the win in this back and forth game of 12-10.
Averett scored first in the second game, when senior
Jessica Long scored on a wild pitch. Huntingdon scored two runs in the fourth inning when MacKenzie Smelley homered to left field to give the Hawks the lead of 2-1. Huntingdon scored another run in the fifth inning adding to their lead 3-1. The Cougars answered back in the seventh scoring two runs to tie the game behind Cauthen's single 3-3. The Hawks capitalized on a passed ball and used a single and a double to left field to take the win.
Averett returns to action tomorrow for a noon doubleheader against LaGrange College.
