DANVILLE, Va.— The Averett University men's soccer team (1-2-1) was handed their second loss of the season on Wednesday night after falling to Roanoke College, 2-1. A goal in the 89
th minute off the foot of Brandon Bauer was the dagger the Maroons needed to claim victory.
Roanoke controlled the pace of the first half offensively as they outshot Averett, 7-1. The Maroons were keeping the ball out wide, which left many scoring opportunities in the middle of the field. Fortunately for Averett, they could not capitalize and each side was scoreless at the halftime break.
The Maroons eventually broke through in the 62
nd minute of the match when Brandon Bauer crossed a ball from the near side of the field which David Kuttner headed inside the far post. However, Averett was able to keep the deficit at one and ten minutes later the Cougars found the equalizer. Averett put enough pressure on the Maroon backline that forced a Roanoke defender to commit a penalty inside his own 18-yard box. Junior
David Cuperman buried his shot from the penalty spot to bring the match even at one.
Each side started to send numbers forward in hopes of finding the go ahead goal. In the 89th minute, a failed clearance left a bouncing ball at the top of the box which Brandon Bauer jumped on to give his team the late lead. The Cougars were unable to answer and dropped the match, 2-1.
Averett returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 16, when they open up conference play at home against Berea College. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
