Three double-doubles aid women's basketball to big win over William Peace

RALEIGH, N.C. — Three Cougars finished with double-doubles as Averett University women's basketball eased to a 79-55 conference road win at William Peace University on Saturday. Junior Amani Ajayi led the way with a career-high 24 points to go with 12 rebounds.

Averet (9-7, 6-2 USA South), which led 36-30 at halftime, extended its lead back to double-digits in the opening minutes of the third quarter. That lead continued to grow once William Peace's top scorer and rebounder Mikayla Ray picked up her third and fourth fouls in less than 30 seconds of each other midway through the quarter.

The Cougars' 21-5 run to start the second half put the game away, and Averett extended that lead to as much as 27 points, 79-52, in the fourth quarter.

Four Cougars scored in double-figures. In addition to Ajayi, sophomore Ravyn Johnson totaled 14 points and 13 rebounds and sophomore Brooke Carthon had 12 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Samm Chandler added 16 points and seven boards.

Averett opened the game on fire, racing out to an 11-2 lead in the first quarter. William Peace (2-11, 2-5 USA South) closed the gap to 13-11 before the Cougars rebuilt their cushion. With Ray leading the charge, the Pacers closed within four before settling for a six-point margin by the break.

Ray finished with 15 points and 17 rebounds for William Peace.

The win Saturday gave Averett a sweep of the regular season series with the Pacers. The Cougars won 101-66 in Danville on Jan. 7.

Averett plays at Meredith College on Sunday at 2 p.m.
