DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University women's soccer team came away with a 1-0 victory on the road against William Peace University on Wednesday night.
Freshman
Josefine Sundbom gathered a loose ball and scored in the eighth minute of the game for the first goal of her career, and that was the only goal of the night as Averett (5-10, 3-3 USA South) dominated possession over William Peace (2-9-1, 0-5 USA South).
Additionally, senior
Bailee Brown, who already broke the program record for career saves earlier this season, added to her repertoire by breaking the school shutouts record, as this shutout gives her 12 on her career at Averett. The previous record was held by
Samantha Lupo, who had 11 shutouts from 2008-11.
The Cougars worked across midfield all night, outshooting the Pacers, 13-3, on the game, including 11 shots on goal. Nine different players registered shots for Averett, with sophomore
Emily Meador, freshman
Thania Hernandez and freshman
Ashley Ruelo leading the way with two apiece. Averett also took nine corner kicks compared to none from William Peace. This made it easier for Brown to break the shutout record, as she only had to make two saves on the night with her teammates doing a good job of keeping the ball out of harm's way.
Next, the Cougars head to Greensboro College for their regular season finale on Oct. 20 at 2:30 p.m.
