DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University volleyball defeated conference foe Greensboro College 3-0 on "Dig Pink" night Wednesday at the Grant Center. The Cougars won 25-21, 25-14 and 25-15.
Averett (8-8, 4-3 USA South) got off to a slow start against Greensboro (2-13, 1-5 USA South) as the Pride led 5-1 early. After a timeout, the Cougars closed the gap before eventually taking a 13-12 advantage. Although Greensboro stayed close, Averett pulled away late by winning five of the last six points to go up 1-0 in the match.
Despite hanging with the Cougars in the opening game, Greensboro couldn't sit at the same table with Averett over the final two sets. The Cougars raced out to a 9-2 lead in Set 2 and easily won 25-14. In the final frame, Averett scored six consecutive points to build a 19-10 advantage. The Pride couldn't recover from that deficit as the Cougars earned the sweep.
Senior
Keenan Marks totaled 22 assists, 10 digs and six kills for Averett, which got a team-high 11 kills from senior
Jordan Pitzer, who hit .409 for the match. Senior
Emily Stanley fetched a team-high 12 digs. Also for the Cougars, sophomore
McKenzie Miller had 15 assists and eight digs, sophomore
Brooke Aaron totaled eight kills and six digs and junior
Madison Dadez finished with eight kills.
It was Oct. 3 and the Cougars wore pink on Wednesday in support of cancer awareness during its annual "Dig Pink" match.
Averett returns to action on Friday when the Cougars travel to Bridgewater College for a non-conference match at 7 p.m.
