RALEIGH, N.C. — The Averett University women's soccer team picked up their second consecutive victory as the Cougars won 1-0 at Meredith College on Saturday thanks to a late goal from freshman
Adriana Perez.
The first half was a defensive battle as there were only a combined four shots taken and the first one came in the 24th minute of play. Senior
Bailee Brown made the save on this attempt followed by two more to keep the match scoreless heading into the halftime break.
Meredith (5-5-1, 1-2 USA South) came out firing on all cylinders out of the halftime break. Up until the 80th minute, the Avenging Angels attempted 10 shots in the second half with Brown making saves on six of those attempts. Averett (4-8, 2-1 USA South) withstood this offensive onslaught and then jumped into the attack. In the 84th minute, freshman
Ashley Ruelo crossed the ball into the box where her bouncing ball went past the Meredith keeper. Fellow freshman
Adriana Perez ran onto the service and put the ball into the empty net to give Averett the 1-0 lead.
The Cougars did not let up any shot attempt in the remaining six minutes of the match as Averett held on for the 1-0 win.
Perez collected her second game winning goal in as many games to lift Averett to the victory while Brown did her part in net, registering nine saves for her fourth shutout of the season.
Averett looks to keep the momentum going as the Cougars travel to Misenheimer, North Carolina, on Tuesday to take on Pfeiffer University. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
