DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University women's tennis earned a 5-4 win over non-conference foe Randolph College in the Cougars' first home match of the season Sunday on the Averett Tennis Courts.
Averett (1-0) took two of three doubles matches to go up 2-1 on Randolph (0-2). Senior
Heidi Sarkkinen and sophomore
Eleanor Crane teamed up for an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles. Freshmen
Kristina Hedelt and
Inka Zeilstra also won 8-6 at No. 2 doubles. Freshman
Rainey Townsend and senior
Ashley Thornton put up a strong battle at No. 3 doubles, nearly giving the Cougars a sweep before falling 8-7.
In singles play. Sarkkinen and Crane notched wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Hedelt clinched the match with a victory over Randolph's Ranita Opoku-Sarfo in No. 4 singles by a score of 6-0, 6-0.
Averett hosts Division II Lees-McRae College on Oct. 13 in its final match of the fall season.
