Early first half run powers Piedmont past women's basketball

DECATUR, Ga. — The Averett University women's basketball team was unable to overcome strong first and third quarters by Piedmont College falling by a final of 70-56 in game two of the Agnes Scott Tip-Off Classic.

Averett (1-1) feel behind early in first quarter action as Piedmont (2-0) managed to jump out to a 23-14 lead following the opening quarter of play. The Cougars battled the Lions close throughout the second frame of play, however Piedmont took a 36-24 lead into halftime.

The Lions came out red-hot following halftime intermission opening a 20-point lead with a 17-9 third quarter run. The fourth quarter would belong to the Cougars though as Averett won the quarter 23-17 to cut into the Lions lead paced by a seven point performance by senior Alexis Roccia and a six point quarter by junior Brooke Carthon

Roccia finished the afternoon with a team-leading 14 points, grabbing eight rebounds and dishing out five assists and collecting three steals. Carthon added nine points and eight rebounds, while junior Ravyn Johnson paced the team with 13 boards for the contest. Freshman Caitlin Reed played well in her Averett debut finishing the day with nine points on two of three shooting from the three-point line.

Johnson's performance against Agnes Scott and Piedmont earned her a spot on the all-tournament team.

Piedmont finished the contest with a slight 51-47 rebounding advantage while knocking down 41.9 percent of the team's shots and scoring 34 points in the paint.

The Cougars will look to get back into the win column Tuesday, Nov. 13 when they travel to the University of Lynchburg for a 7 p.m. out of conference matchup.
