LYNCHBURG, Va. — A dominant 13-0 run in the third quarter helped propel the Averett University women's basketball team to a 60-52 non-conference road win over the University of Lynchburg on Tuesday night.
This marked the first time Averett (2-1) came out victorious over Lynchburg (1-1) since 2005, as the Hornets won the previous five meetings between the teams. Additionally, Averett held a decisive 47-30 advantage on the boards, which included 15 offensive rebounds.
Averett's stout defensive play gave it the leg up early on, as it forced six turnovers in the first quarter to head into the second with a 13-8 lead. However, Lynchburg bounced back with a 13-2 run in the second quarter to take a lead that it held for the remainder of the half. The Cougars trailed, 28-24, after one half of play as the Hornets outscored them, 21-11, in the second quarter.
Averett fell into an eight point deficit early in the third quarter before it went on a pivotal 13-0 run to take a 41-36 lead with 3:26 remaining in the third. This was a lead the Cougars didn't relinquish for the remainder of the game after they went on a 9-2 run early in the fourth quarter to give themselves a comfortable 10-point lead with less than five minutes left in the game, and they were able to maintain the lead from there.
