DEMOREST, Ga. — Four Cougars scored in double figures as Averett University men's basketball team earned a big conference road win by beating Piedmont College 84-75 on Saturday afternoon at Cave Arena.
Averett (12-11, 6-8 USA South) led for most the second half before Piedmont (14-9, 9-5 USA South) tied the game at 73-73 on Taylor Mills' 3-pointer with 4:29 to play. The Cougars put the game away by answering with a 10-0 run while allowing just two points over the final four minutes.
A close game early, Averett gained its biggest lead of the game — of 11 points — on a 3-pointer by senior James Contreras Jr. with 1:55 remaining in the first half. The Cougars settled for a 42-33 lead at halftime.
Contreras Jr. would led the way for the Cougars with 18 points and five rebounds. Senior Darin Ketner set a new career-high in points with 17, freshman Harrison Cochran followed with 14 points and four rebounds and junior Jalen Burnett totaled 10 points.
Averett shot nearly 56 percent from the field to Piedmont's 45 percent.
Piedmont also had four people finish with double-digit scoring with Justin Vallejo pacing the Lions with 19 points and eight rebounds.
The Cougars will return home on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. to face conference foe William Peace University on Senior Night.
