GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Averett University baseball team continued its road trip to start the 2018 season against Guilford College. The Cougars came out with a 6-5 victory.
Averett (1-2) had runners on second and third with two outs in the top of the second and sophomore BK Stancil made the most of the opportunity by plating both runs with a two-RBI single through the right side. The Cougars took advantage of a wild pitch in the fifth inning to extend their lead to three.
In the bottom half of the fifth, the Quakers (0-2) scored three runs on three hits to tie the game. Each side picked up a run in their respective halves of the sixth and seventh innings to bring the score of the game to all level at five.
Averett kept the pressure on offensively heading into the top of the eighth inning as the Cougars were able to work the bases loaded with one out. Senior Bradley Tickle singled up the middle, scoring Stancil from third to give Averett the 6-5 edge, which would prove to be the game winner.
Senior Dallas Smithers picked up the win, allowing only two Quaker base runners the rest of the way as he was able to preserve the 6-5 Cougar win.
Stancil finished the day 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBI's in addition to scoring the game winning run. Smithers also had three hits while Tickle chipped in with two.
Freshman Dillon Touchard made his first ever collegiate appearance and start on the mound today. The Ponchatoula, Louisiana product went four innings, giving up four hits and three runs while striking out five Guilford batters and walking one.
Averett opens up their home schedule in less than 24 hours as Southern Virginia University comes to town for a doubleheader on Thursday, Feb. 15. First pitch for game one is at 12 p.m.
