ATLANTA, Ga. —The Averett University softball team split a pair of non-conference games with Emory University to open its season on Thursday afternoon at Cooper Field. Emory took the first game 1-0 and the Cougars completed the day with a 5-3 win to give them it's first win of the season.
It was a pitching duel up until the bottom of the fourth inning in Game 1. Emory's designated hitter Sarah Katz singled to center field. The Eagles would score their lone run on a throwing error made by Averett.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Aherron and freshman Ashley Carbajal each had one hit for the Cougars.
In Game 2, Averett (1-1) got off to a good start when junior
Taylor Hodges singled to left field to score sophomore Nicole Cauthen making it 1-0 in the top of the second. In the top of the fourth junior
Andrea Grant homered to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead.The Cougars did not led up adding two more runs on sophomore Kaitlyn Aherron's double to center field, and Grant's double to left center.
Emory (2-2) scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth but it wasn't enough, as Averett scored one more run in the seventh inning on freshman Ashley Carbajal's RBI to end the afternoon.
Aherron and Grant led the Cougars each going 2-for-4 at the plate. Sophomore Taylor Bailey got the win from the pitching circle.
