DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University baseball team dropped an 8-3 contest to non-conference foe Lynchburg College on Sunday afternoon at Owen-Fulton Field.
Averett (1-5) came out hot, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore Cody Jones reached on a fielding error by the Hornets scores junior Kyle Vidano. The Cougars scored their next run on a sacrifice fly by junior Matt Tuggle, which plated Jones to give the Cougars an early 2-0 lead.
In the top of the third inning, Lynchburg (1-1) responded with two runs of its own. The Hornets continued their swarm with five runs in the fourth inning. After an error prolonged the inning, Matt Ward roped a three-run triple to clear the bases and the Hornets added one more run after that to take a 7-2 advantage.
The Cougars scored a run back in the bottom of the fifth inning on Jones' RBI single that senior Dallas Smithers.
Offensively, Jones finished with two RBIs and Tuggle with one RBI, and the pair also led the Cougars with two hits apiece.
Thomas Powell went 4-for-4 with an RBI for the Hornets.
Averett returns to the diamond on Tuesday when it hosts non-conference foe Roanoke College at 2 p.m.
