Baseball falls to No. 17 Roanoke at home

DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University baseball team lost to 17th ranked Roanoke College on Tuesday afternoon, 14-2.

Averett (1-6) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Kyle Vidano led off the inning with a single through the right side. A couple of outs advanced him to third before sophomore Cody Jones lofted a ball down the left field line to score Vidano and give the Cougars the edge.

The Maroons (2-1) were kept off the scoreboard in the first three innings of play until putting nine on the board in the top of the fourth to take a commanding 9-1 lead. An untimely Cougar error extended the inning long enough for Roanoke to hit back-to-back homer runs with the first coming with the bases loaded.

Roanoke carried this momentum from the fourth into their next at bat, working the bases loaded again but this time via three walks. The Maroons took advantage of the situation by bringing home two runs off sacrifice flies to extend their lead to 11-1.

Each side would plate runs in the eighth inning with Roanoke picking up three and Averett collecting one on Jones' second RBI of the day that scored sophomore Adam George to bring the score to 14-2.

Neither side would scratch any runs across in the ninth as Averett would fall to the Maroons.

Vidano finished the day 3-for-4 with a run scored while Jones went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Baseball returns to the diamond on Wednesday, Feb. 21, when Eastern Mennonite University comes to town for non-conference action. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
