Softball takes one of two from conference foe Ferrum

FERRUM, Va. — Averett University softball split a conference doubleheader with Ferrum College on Saturday afternoon. The Cougars blanked Ferrum 5-0 before falling 2-0 in the nightcap.

In the opener, Averett (6-12, 2-2 USA South) broke a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth. Ferrum (12-4, 3-1 USA South) committed three errors, the last of which allowed freshmen Ashley Carbajal and Makenzie Collins to score and give the Cougars a 2-0 advantage.

Another Ferrum error in the seventh inning helped get the Cougars going again. With one out, junior Andrea Grant knocked an RBI single to right field. Carbajal's RBI triple scored freshman pinch runner Shelby Couzzi from first, and Collins added another insurance run on her RBI single to extend Averett's lead to 5-0.

Sophomore right-hander Kaitlyn Aherron (3-6) closed the door on Ferrum in the seventh for a shutout. She finished with seven strikeouts while allowing just four hits and two walks.

Aherron and Collins each had a pair of hits for the Cougars in Game 1.

In Game 2, Ferrum grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth. The Panthers got two aboard with the help of an error and walk. After the Panthers moved the runners over on a sacrifice bunt, Maddie Ols drove them both in with a two-run single to center field.

???????Aherron and Carbajal had two hits apiece for the Averett offense.

???????Averett's doubleheader at Mary Baldwin University scheduled for Sunday has been postponed due to inclement weather in the forecast. The Cougars' next scheduled games are set for Tuesday at Roanoke College.
