DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University baseball split a non-conference doubleheader with Pfeiffer University on Saturday afternoon. Averett dropped the opener to the Falcons 7-4 and completed the series with a 2-0 victory.

Freshman Cole Spain dominated on the mound in the final game of the series. Spain held Pfeifer (12-4) to only three hits and had 10 strikeouts in his showing. Averett (6-15) got on the board first in the third inning when senior Dallas Smithers reached on a fielding error by Pfeiffer to score freshman Ryan Traylor. The Cougars would extend its lead to 2-0 in the sixth inning as sophomore Cody Jones singled through the left side scoring junior Kyle Vidano.

Traylor will ear his first save on the year.

Vidano, Jones, and sophomore Zack DeCarlo led the Cougars with two hits apiece.

In Game 1, the score was 3-1 entering into the eighth inning. Averett got bases loaded with Smithers up to bat, Smithers hit a three-run double to deep centerfield to give his team the lead by one. Â In the ninth inning Pfeifer (12-4) tied the game 4-4 on a sacrifice fly from Kyler Fairchild to force extra innings. In the tenth inning Kirby Lambert hit his second homerun of the game to put the Falcons ahead by two. Pfeiffer would score another run later in the inning.

Pfieffer would score first on a 3-run homerun from Lambert in the third inning to get his team off to a good start. The Cougars began to chip away at the lead in the fifth inning on a single to right center from junior Neil Hutchens to score senior Bradley Tickle.

Smithers, Tickle, and Hutchens each had two hits apiece. Smithers also finished with three RBI's.
