LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. — The Averett University baseball team fell, 8-2, in the opener of the three-game series at Covenant College before losing, 12-2, in the nightcap.
In game one, Averett (6-17, 2-6 USA South) tied the game at one in the top of the third inning. Junior Kyle Vidano hit an RBI-single up the middle that scored freshman Nick Taylor. Covenant (9-12, 7-4 USA South) jumped back out in front in the next half inning by adding three runs to their total for the 4-1 edge. The Cougars cut their deficit to 4-2 in the top of the fifth when senior Dallas Smithers singled through the left side, scoring Vidano from second.
The Scots would go on to win by adding two in the fifth and a pair in the eighth.
Vidano and Taylor each went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored. Junior Dillon Roberts pitched three innings of relief, giving up two earned runs while collecting a strikeout.
Averett grabbed the early lead in game two by tallying a run in their first chance at bat. Senior Bradley Tickle reached safely on a Scot error which also allowed Vidano to score from third. Covenant went on to build an 8-1 lead with a run in the second, two in the third and five in the fifth. Averett would get one back in the sixth on junior Neil Hutchens RBI-single to left center. The Scots tacked on four more runs in the seventh and eighth for their 12-2 victory.
Averett and Covenant finish the three-game series on Friday at 3 p.m.
