BREVARD, N.C. — The Averett University women's lacrosse team extended their winning streak to three with their 9-7 win at Brevard College on Saturday.
Through the first eleven minutes of play, Averett (4-4) held a 3-2 advantage over Brevard (2-6). Freshman
Haley Boardway tallied her third goal of the season at the 19:28 mark to give the Cougars their first lead. Over the next 10:49 of gameplay, the Tornados would respond with three unanswered goals to reclaim the lead at 5-3.
Freshman
Rachel Hale would cut the Cougar deficit to one as the Wilmington, North Carolina native converted on her free position attempt in the 24
th minute of play. Freshman
Margaret Bautista scored right before the end of the half to knot things up at five.
Averett pulled away early in the second half as the Cougars recorded four consecutive goals in the first 12 minutes of the period. Freshman
Elizabeth Peasley was credited with the first three with Bautista collecting the fourth and final Averett goal that gave the Cougars a commanding 9-5 lead. This offensive surge turned out to be the difference maker as Brevard would gather two more goals before Averett closed the game out for the 9-7 victory.
Peasley continued her monstrous start to her collegiate career by tallying four goals in the match to bring her season total to 33. Bautista finished with two goals to go along with a draw control.
Averett returns to action on Thursday, March 15, when the Cougars hit the road for a non-conference matchup with Sweet Briar College. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.
