DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University men's lacrosse team fell 21-2 at home to Piedmont College on Saturday afternoon.
Averett (0-6, 0-3 USA South) tallied both of their goals in the third quarter of play. The first one came on a man up opportunity after Piedmont (6-5, 2-0 USA South) committed a slashing penalty. Freshman
Brenner Woodcock found fellow freshman
Nick Delapena in the slot and the Chesterfield, Virginia, native fired his shot past the Lions goalkeeper for the Cougars' first goal of the day. Three minutes later, the Cougars found the back of the net once again on freshman
Joonas Mattila's second goal of the season. Mattila split a pair of Lion defenders before tucking his shot inside the far post.
Piedmont took control from this point forward as the Lions held the Cougars scoreless and tacked on four more goals to their total for the 21-2 victory. The Lions had control for most of the game as they collected five goals in the first quarter and nine in the second for a 14-0 halftime advantage. Piedmont put 13 shots on goal in the second half and converted on seven of them to propel them to the win.
Delapena and Mattila each finished with a goal while freshman
Keshawn Downing had eight ground balls. Freshman
Jacob Shriver ended with 18 saves in net.
The Cougars return to action on Saturday, March 24, when they travel to Fayetteville, North Carolina to take on Methodist University. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
