Raleigh, N.C. — Averett University softball fell to William Peace University in two close conference games on Sunday afternoon. William Peace took the games 5-4 and 4-3 respectively.

In Game 1, Averett (7-17, 3-5 USA South) scored first when freshman Ashley Carbajal sored junior
Taylor Hodges on a groundout to the shortstop. The Cougars extended there lead 2-0 in the third inning on a wild pitch by the Pacers scoring sophomore Kaitlyn Aherron.

William Peace (14-12, 5-5 USA South) would cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning due to an error by the Cougars. In the fourth inning the Pacers would tie the game on a homerun by Olivia Oates.

In the sixth inning Averett would take the lead once again when freshman Makenzie Collins singled through the right side scoring  Carbajal. Sophomore Casey Cook would follow with a sacrifice fly scoring freshman Shelby Couzzi to put the Cougars ahead by two runs. The Pacers would start a rally in the bottom of the seventh inning scoring three runs to give them the win.

Aherron and Collins finished with two hits apiece in the opener.

In the final game, Averett jumped out to a 2-0 lead to take control in the first inning. Sophomore Nicole Cauthen hit a double scoring Carbajal and Cook. The Pacers responded in the bottom half of the inning with three runs of its own.

Collins would tie the game on a single in the third inning scoring Carbajal. William Peace would follow with a run in the bottom of the third to give the team the win, as both teams went scoreless in the remaining innings.

Junior
Andrea Grant, Cauthen, and Collins had the three hits for the Cougars. Cauthen led with two RBI's.

Averett will return home on Wednesday, March 21, to face Emory & Henry College in a non-conference doubleheader at 1 p.m.
