FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Averett University softball team snagged two victories over Methodist University in conference action on Friday afternoon. The Cougars claimed the first win 12-0 in five innings and defeated the Monarchs 10-2 in Game 2 in just five innings as well.
Averett (9-17, 5-5 USA South) who was the home team in today's doubleheader due to weather in Virginia, got off 12 hits to help the squad sail to a quick win in the first matchup. The Cougars started off strong with a 7-0 lead by the end of the first frame. Junior
Andrea Grant doubled to left field scoring two of the seven runs. Sophomore Casey Cook also singled through the left side to add two to the Cougars total. In the third inning Averett added its 10th run due to freshman Ashley Carbajal's single up the middle scoring sophomore Kaitlyn Aherron. The Cougars scored two more runs in the fourth inning before ending the game in the fifth.
Freshman Makenzie Collins led the way with three hits, Carbajal and junior
Essence Pulliam followed with two hits apiece. Aherron, Cook, and Grant each totaled a combined six RBI's.
Aherron will get the win bringing her record to 4-8. She had 10 strikeouts with only two hits in her outing.
In the second game, Methodist (7-23, 5-7 USA South) led the Cougars 2-0 until the bottom of the second. Aherron hit a 2 RBI double to put the Cougars ahead by two. In the third inning Grant hit a sacrifice fly to right field scoring a run. Aherron came up big for the Cougars again, she hit another two-run double this time to right field to give the score of 7-2. Cook also added two runs of her own in the fourth inning to stretch the Cougar lead by seven. Averett would score one more run in the fifth inning to end the game.
Aherron finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Senior
Amanda Wright followed with two hits.
Averett returns to the field on Wednesday to take on N.C. Wesleyan College at home for a 2 p.m. conference doubleheader.
