DANVILLE, Va. — Senior
Amanda Wright's walk-off, two-run homer in Game 1 highlighted Averett University softball's pair of wins over conference foe N.C. Wesleyan College Wednesday on Senior Day. Wright's blast gave Averett a 4-2 win in the opener, while sophomore Taylor Bailey's 1-0 shutout completed the doubleheader sweep at Cougar Field.
Tied 2-2 entering the bottom of the seventh of the opener, Averett freshman Makenzie Collins drew a one-out walk to put the winning run aboard. It didn't matter as Wright ended the game with one swing. On a 2-1 pitch, Wright hammered Braswell's pitch over the wall in right-center, sending the Cougars' dugout out to home to celebrate the walk-off win.
Averett (13-17, 9-5 USA South) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Sophomore Kaitlyn Aherron led off with a triple to deep right field and later scored on freshman Ashley Carbajal's single. Carbajal then came around on sophomore Nicole Cauthen's RBI single.
Averett kept N.C. Wesleyan (19-11, 9-5 USA South) in check, getting out of several jams before the Bishops broke through to tie the game in the fifth. Beth Braswell's RBI double cut the Cougars' lead in half, and N.C. Wesleyan later scored on an infield error with the bases loaded to knot the score at 2-2.
Averett loaded the bases in the sixth and looked to take a 4-2 lead on a single to right field. However, the runs were taken off the board as the batter was called out for being out of the box for the third out.
Freshman right-hander Dani Kahn (3-4) pitched two scoreless innings of relief to set up Wright's heroics in the bottom of the seventh.
Cauthen went 3-for-4 in Game 1 while Aherron and Carbajal each had two hits for the Cougars, who totaled 10 hits as a team. Although she didn't factor into the decision, Aherron allowed just two runs — one earned — on five hits and five walks while striking out five in five innings in the circle.
In the nightcap, Averett broke a scoreless game in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs and the bases loaded, a wild pitch scored Carbajal from third base to put the Cougars ahead 1-0. That was all Bailey (4-5) needed as the right-hander tossed a gem to keep the Bishops' offense at bay. She allowed only six hits while not allowing a walk or a run over seven innings.
Carbajal and Cauthen each had two hits in Game 2.
Averett travels to play conference foe Greensboro College on Friday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader to finish the USA South regular season. That game was moved up a day from Friday due to potential inclement weather in the forecast.
