GREENSBORO, N.C. — Averett University softball finished up regular season conference play with a doubleheader split at Greensboro College on Thursday. The Cougars took the opener 6-3, but fell 4-1 in Game 2.
In Game 1, Averett (14-18, 10-6 USA South) overcame a 1-0 deficit early by plating six runs in the fifth inning. Sophomore Kaitlyn Aherron's two-run single gave the Cougars a 2-1 lead. After an error allowed Aherron to score on the next play, junior
Andrea Grant smashed a two-run homer. Averett added another run on a wild pitch to go up 6-1.
Although Greensboro (16-20, 6-10 USA South) scored twice in the seventh, freshman right-hander Dani Kahn slammed the door on the Pride to earn her third save in relief of Aherron (4-4), who got the win.
Senior
Amanda Wright went 2-for-3 as Averett totaled seven hits as a team in the opener.
In Game 2, Averett went ahead 1-0 on Aherron's sacrifice fly, which scored sophomore Casey Cook. That score held until Greensboro struck in the fifth. Hayley Tickle put the Pride in front 2-1 on a two-run double. An RBI single and a sacrifice fly increased Greensboro's lead to 4-1 and the Pride held on from there after limiting the Cougars to just two hits.
Averett hosts non-conference foe Emory & Henry College on Tuesday.
