DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University women's tennis team fell 7-2 to Pfeiffer University on Friday afternoon.
Junior Heidi Sarkkinen, who was ranked 19
th in the latest Oracle/ITA Division III Atlantic South Region poll for singles, was a part of both of Averett's victories as the Cougars won at No. 1 doubles and singles on Friday. The Oulu, Finland, native along with senior Hannah Mattson took down their opponent in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (7-4), to cut Averett's deficit to one heading into the singles matches.
Sarkkinen stayed undefeated (10-0) this season in singles play as she carried the momentum she gained from the exciting finish in her doubles match into her singles competition. She won in straight sets (6-2, 6-2) over Juliana Batah of Pfeiffer (6-7) to not only stay unbeaten this spring but in any of the singles matches during the spring in which she has competed in the navy and gold. Unfortunately, Averett could not muster up anymore victories as the Cougars went on to fall to the Falcons, 7-2.
Averett plays Sweet Briar College at home on Saturday. The match is set to start at 1:30 p.m.
