DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University baseball picked up a 8-7 win over the University of Mary Washington on Wednesday afternoon at Owen-Fulton Field.
 
In the eighth inning Mary Washington (5-5) lead 7-6. Averett (4-13) began a comeback rally when senior Dallas Smithers led off the inning with a single to second base. Junior Neil Hutchens scored Smithers to tie the game 7-7 with a single to right field. Hutchens scored the go ahead run after he stole third base and advanced on a throwing error by the Eagles.
 
The Eagles got on the board first when Christian Hague had an RBI double in the first inning. The Cougars would respond in the bottom of the inning with two runs of their own. Averett would continue its scoring with two more runs in the second inning. Entering the top of the eighth inning the Cougars lead 6-5. Mary Washington scored two runs on a throwing error by Averett to get out in front 7-6.
 
Smithers led the Cougars going 4-for-5 with three runs scored. Hutchens and freshman Ryan Traylor followed with two hits apiece.
 
Traylor will get the win, his record is now (1-2). Smithers will receive his first save on the year.
