DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University women's lacrosse team won their second consecutive match over Chatham University, 18-6.
 
Averett (3-4) put the game away in the second half by adding on seven goals while shutting out Chatham (1-2). In the second stanza, the Cougars led in draw controls (6-2), ground balls (17-11), clears (11-9) and shots (16-4). Freshman 
Breanne Sawall was only called on to make two saves in the second half compared to six in the first. With 11:18 left in the game, Roccia recorded her 16
th goal of the season to give the Cougars a 16-6 lead and a running clock the rest of the way. Averett would put two more goals on the board and cruise to the 18-6 victory.
 
Averett controlled the first 11 minutes of the game, taking a 4-0 lead. Freshman 
Elizabeth Peasley had five goals in the first 30 minutes of play with her first strike coming just 51 seconds into the match. Freshman 
Gabbie Porter extended the Cougar lead to two about a minute later off a free-position attempt. The action was back and forth for the next eight minutes before Peasley struck the twine at the 20:44 mark. Junior 
Alixis Roccia received a free-position attempt of her own 55 seconds later and found the back of the net to give Averett the 4-0 lead.
 
Chatham cut their deficit to 4-2 with just under 15 minutes to go in the first period. This would be as close as they would get, though, as Averett built their lead to as large as six and headed to the halftime break with an 11-6 lead.
 
Peasley tied her season-high with six goals and chipped in an assist. The Wilmington, North Carolina native now has 16 goals in her last three matches and raised her season goal total to 29. Roccia had five goals and three assists to lead the team with eight points. The midfielder has had at least three goals in her last three outings.
 
Averett hits the road on Saturday, March 10, when the Cougars travel to take on Brevard College. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
