Women's tennis falls to Piedmont in quarterfinals of conference tournament

LAGRANGE, Ga. — The Averett University women's tennis team had their season come to a close with a 7-2 loss to Piedmont College in the quarterfinals of the USA South Conference Tournament.

Junior Heidi Sarkkinen finished her third consecutive spring undefeated in singles play as the Oulu, Finland, native beat Morgan Buchholz, at No. 1 singles, in straight sets (6-1, 6-1). In every win this season, Sarkkinen has come out victorious in straight sets and this win marks her 19th in a row. Sarkkinen was successful in doubles play on the day as well as she paired with senior Hannah Mattson in the No. 1 doubles spot. They nearly completed the sweep as they won their match 8-1 for Averett's (8-10) second win of the day.

Piedmont (12-4) collected the two remaining matches in doubles play and five in the singles portion of the match for the 7-2 victory.

Averett ends the season with eight victories as a team, which is the most the program has had in recent history.
