DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University softball team fell 2-0 to Lynchburg College on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference matchup. The Hornets defeated the Cougars 5-1 in the first matchup and 3-1 in the second.
In the first game, Lynchburg (24-10) scored first with two runs in the third inning. In the fourth inning the Hornets tacked on two more runs behind Kayla Hugate's triple to right center. Averett (19-23) got on the bored in the sixth inning when freshman Kaitlyn Aherron scored freshman Brianna Harris. Lynchburg scored its final run in the seventh inning to give a score of 5-1.
Senior
Amanda Wright led the Cougars with two hits. Aherron, Harris, and freshman Casey Cook each followed with one hit apiece.
In Game 2 the Hornets scored two runs early in the first inning to give a 2-0 lead. Lynchburg scored its last run in the second inning to complete the Hornets scoring. Junior
Andrea Grant doubled to right center in the seventh inning scoring the Cougars lone run.
Sophomore Breanna Murphy, Wright, and Grant had the only three hits for Cougars.
The Cougars will look to avenge themselves at home in their last home doubleheader against non-conference Eastern Mennonite on Friday at 2 p.m.
