FERRUM, Va. — The Averett University women's soccer team dropped their 2018 season opener 2-0 at Ferrum College on Friday night.

The first half was controlled mainly by Ferrum (1-0) as the Panthers outshot the Cougars 11-1. However, senior goalkeeper
Bailee Brown made four saves in the opening frame to maintain the shutout as both sides entered the halftime break tied at a scoreless draw.

Ferrum was able to keep their offensive pressure up in the opening minutes of the second half and it finally paid off for them as they struck twine twice in the matter of 61 seconds. Brianna Honse scored in the 56 minute of the match to give her team the lead before Cayla Berry scored about a minute later to give Ferrum the two goal advantage.

Averett (0-1) was unable to get much going offensively the rest of the way as the Cougars eventually fell to Ferrum, 2-0.

Brown added five more saves in the second half for a total of nine for the match which raises her career mark to 357. The Salem, Virginia, native is now only 15 saves away from tying Tunisa Bumphus's record of 372 saves.

Averett opens up their home schedule on Sunday, Sept. 2, as the Cougars welcome Randolph-Macon College to the friendly confines of Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m.Â
