EMORY, Va. — Senior
Linnea Meyer's goal late in the second half proved to be the difference as the Averett University women's soccer team won its second consecutive match with a 1-0 non-conference victory at Emory & Henry College on Tuesday night.
Scoreless deep into the second half, Emory & Henry (0-5-1) cleared the ball out to set up a corner kick from the right side. Senior
Eimear Reddin, who took the corner, sent the ball into a crowd of players directly in front of the goal and Meyer headed it in from a five yards out to put Averett (2-4-0) on top in the 78th minute.Â
The scoring opportunity was one of several for the Cougars within a several-minute span. Both teams finished the contest with 11 shots, with six coming on goal for Averett.
Averett senior goalkeeper
Bailee Brown thwarted off several Emory & Henry attempts. She finished with four saves, including a key stop on a one-on-one opportunity in the 62nd minute.
Meyer's goal was her first of the season and third of her career. The assist was Reddin's first in 2018 and sixth for her career.
The win gives the Cougars' their second victory in a row after topping Agnes Scott College on Sunday with a late goal.Â
Averett was scheduled to play at Brevard College on Saturday, but that game has been postponed until Sunday, Sept. 23, because of Hurricane Florence. The Cougars will take the pitch next on Sept. 19 at home against Randolph College.
