DANVILLE, Va. – The Averett University women's soccer team hung tough and forced overtime against Randolph College but couldn't put it away as Randolph scored a late goal and the Cougars fell, 2-1, Wednesday night on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
Sara Bane was the game changer for the Wildcats as she scored both goals, including the game-winner with 1:47 left in the first overtime period, where she got past the defense and placed a ball perfectly over senior
Bailee Brown's head, who couldn't reach the leaping save. Brown made nine saves on the night, continuing to add to her program record for career saves in her final year at Averett.
Randolph (4-0) ended the game with 25 shots and 12 on goal, as Bane put together 14 shots and nine shots on goal by herself. Averett (2-5) finished with six shots and four shots on goal, as freshman
Thania Hernandez led the team with four shots, two shots on goal and the Cougars' lone goal of the game.
Randolph struck quickly as Bane, who is the team's leading scorer, got her first goal in the fifth minute of the game to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. Averett responded not too long after, though, as sophomore
Emily Meador made a nice pass to Hernandez, who finished it to tie it at 1-1 in the 12th minute of the game.
A scoreless second half led to overtime, where Randolph closed the game out in the final minutes.
The Cougars return home on Saturday as they host Greensboro College for a 1 p.m. matchup.
