DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University men's soccer team fell by a final of 4-1 to Hampden-Sydney College Wednesday afternoon on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
Hampden-Sydney (2-2-1) struck for the opening goal of the contest in the 18th minute when Spell Carr crossed a ball into the box that Cody Brugos headed into the back of the Cougars net.
The Tigers increased the lead to 2-0 just before halftime when Jacob Siler powered a ball over the Cougars keeper off a pass from Paul Mahaffy.
Averett (2-4) closed the gap to one goal 50 seconds into the second half when freshman
Kellen Fees was dragged down inside the box forcing a penalty kick opportunity for the Cougars. Senior
Sean Dunbar capitalized on the Hampden-Sydney miscue launching a shot into the net for his second score on the year.
However, the Tigers added goals in the 49th and 62nd minutes to extend the lead to 4-1.
Dunbar finished the afternoon with four shots, three of which landed on frame while freshman
Erik Blick finished with three shots and freshman
Johnny Kummander and Fees each contributed a pair of shots apiece.
Junior
Austin Bramhall finished the contest with five saves in 90 minutes of action as Wednesday's battle also featured six yellow cards and 34 fouls.
The Cougars are scheduled to return back to action Sept. 21 as they open USA South Conference action with a trip to Lookout Mountain, Ga. for a meeting with Covenant College at 4:30 p.m.
