LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. — The Averett University men's soccer team battled the Covenant College Scots to a 0-0 draw Friday evening in the Cougars USA South opener.
Junior
Austin Bramhall turned in one of his most impressive performances in the blue and gold as the goalkeeper turned away nine shots on goal, collecting nine saves in the match and keeping Covenant (6-2-1, 3-0-1 USAC) scoreless.
Sophomore
Nademe Tokhli added to his season totals contributing five shots three of which landed on frame. While freshman
Leevi Partanen looked strong up front for the Cougars attack ending the match with two shot attempts.
The Cougars wrapped up the match with six shots on goal as senior
Sean Dunbar's free ball strike midway through the second half nearly put Averett up 1-0, however Covenant recovered on the play and kept the Cougars out of the net.
Averett would have another chance in the 106' minute when Partanen collected a pass up the sideline, slipped past two Covenant defenders and fired a shot from the left corner of the eight-yard box that was saved by the Scots.
Covenant finished the match with a 28-15 shot advantage and a nine to six shot on goal edge as both squads traded offensive blows throughout the match, Averett controlling much of the opening half, while the Scots managed to come out strong in the opening minutes of the second frame.
Friday evenings clash featured 30 foul calls between the two squads and five yellow cards issued, four going to the Cougars.
Averett will return back to action Sept. 22 as they close out the USA South opening trip with a 2:30 showdown with the Maryville College Scots in Maryville, Tenn.
