DANVILLE, Va. — Freshman
Thania Hernandez collects her second collegiate goal in as many games in Averett University women's soccer's 4-1 loss to Greensboro College on Saturday.
Â
The opening minutes of the second half saw back and forth action between both sides. Greensboro extended their lead to four with a goal in the 57
th minute before Averett (2-6) went down and collected one of their own two minutes later. Hernandez took the ball from the far side of the field and beat multiple Greensboro defenders to the front of goal. The Danville native laced her shot inside the near post to put the Cougars on the scoreboard and cut the Pride lead to 4-1.
Â
Both sides created chances the rest of the way but to no avail as the match ended with the Pride ahead 4-1.
Â
Greensboro made their presence felt from the start of the match as the Pride challenged senior goalkeeper
Bailee Brown early on. In the seventh minute of play, Greensboro capitalized on their offensive pressure when Anna Rae Porcelli jumped on a loose ball at the top of the box, floating her right-footed shot inside the top right corner.
Â
The Pride used the momentum from this goal as they were able to maintain possession in Averett's end of the field for the majority of the first half. This constant attack led to two more goals for Greensboro who went into halftime with a 3-0 lead.
Â
Brown finished the match with eight saves.
Â
Averett returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 23, when the Cougars travel to take on Brevard College. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
