Averett's Sarkkinen's run ends in singles semifinals at ITA Regionals

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — Averett University's women's tennis senior Heidi Sarkkinen's run in the ITA Regionals Flight A singles championship ended with a loss in the semifinals on Monday morning.

Sarkkinen, the No. 10 seed in Fight A singles, lost to Carnegie Mellon University's Danna Taylor, 6-2, 6-2. 

Sarkkinen advanced to Monday's semifinals with a pair of wins on Sunday. She beat Carnegie Mellon's Victoria Chang, 6-3, 6-3, in the Round of 16. From there, she beat Johns Hopkins' Sophia Strickland in the quarterfinals, 6-3, 7-5. Sarkkinen won her first two singles matches on Saturday. In the first round, she knocked off Franklin & Marshall College's Gavriel Rubenstein 6-1, 6-0. Sarkkinen then advanced to play Washington and Lee University's Taylor Garcia in the second around later in the day. After dropping the first set, Sarkkinen bounced back to take down Garcia 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. 

Sarkkinen also won the ITA Regionals Flight B doubles championship on Sunday with teammate Eleanor Crane.
