DANVILLE, Va. — As part of Homecoming weekend, the Averett University men's soccer team fell to Greensboro College, 2-0, Friday night on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
Two goals early in the second half made the difference for Greensboro (5-2, 3-1 USA South), as the Pride logged both goals within five minutes of each other. Averett (2-7-1, 0-3-1 USA South) had its fair share of good looks as well, totaling 18 shots compared to the Pride's 24, but couldn't capitalize as Greensboro's defense consistently swarmed the ball to either block or contest the shots.
Both teams went scoreless in the first half, but Greensboro held a 13-6 shot advantage over the Cougars. For Averett, sophomore
Colton Dutchess had five saves and made a handful of impressive plays on the ball.
The Pride got momentum going in the second half, however, as Ryan Mule headed in a goal off the corner kick in the 54th minute to give Greensboro a 1-0 lead. Shortly thereafter, Averett attempted to clear a ball down the field, but Jordy Briceno stole it for the Pride and laid it in just out of Dutchess' reach in the top right corner of the net.
Sophomore
Nademe Tokhli, who came into this game leading the team with 20 shots, added to his total with a team-high seven shots and two on goal. Senior
Huso Dukic and freshman
Johnny Kummander also got some good looks, combining for five shots and two shots on goal.
Averett returns to action on Oct. 3 where it travels to Pfeiffer University for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
